Poker Hand Rankings - Deciding the Winner
It is the basic requirement of every poker player that he or she understands the rules of the game and also poker hand rankings.
Poker hand rankings are the order of priority of various hands played in the game of poker. It is not only important to identify the winner of a particular poker game, but also to know the other players and their positions in the game. Once you have identified this, you will gain more confidence and see for yourself whether you will be able to beat these players.
Poker hand rankings are similar for most of the poker games. The player who has the highest poker hand ranking and the highest number of cards is the winner. Irrespective of the game you play, it is imperative that you understand the rankings so that you can take calculated decisions.
Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a king, Full House and Flush are some of the hands. Royal flush is the most rare and you can see them only in movies and television programs. The Royal Flush has 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of the same suit or category.
The second strongest hand is the Straight Flush wherein there are five cards in perfect numerical order of the same suit. The value of the cards in a Straight Flush is lesser than that of a Royal Flush. An example of this is 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
When a player has four cards of the same number, it is referred to as a four of a kind poker hand ranking. If two players have this poker hand ranking, then the player who has a high value card is the winner. Four sixes will obviously be ranked higher than four twos.
A full house ranking is one where the player has five cards. Out of these five, three of the cards should be of the same number and the remaining two should be identical. When a player has five cards of the same suit, it is referred to as Flush.
When five cards are in numerical order, but not following the same suit, it is referred to as straight. When a player has three cards of the same number, it is known as three of a kind. The player who has two sets of poker cards having similar numerical value, the player has a two pair poker hand ranking.
The other poker rankings are one pair and high card. When the player only has one pair and the number is similar, it is said to be one pair ranking. If a player does not have any of the above hands, then the only alternative is to rely on high card ranking. This means that the player who has the highest number of cards is the winner if none of the other players have managed to make a hand.
